Waterproofing technology is the most meaningful choice for wet weather hikers. Gore-Tex and eVent membranes are the premium waterproof-breathable standards -- they keep water out while allowing moisture vapor from your foot to escape. Non-branded waterproofing is typically less breathable and less durable over time. For most hiking in wet conditions, boots with a named waterproof membrane perform significantly better than budget waterproofing claims.

Break-in period is the variable most hikers underestimate. A stiff leather hiking boot may require 30-50 miles of hiking before conforming comfortably to your foot. Wearing new boots on a long trail without adequate break-in produces blisters and hotspots. Synthetic boots and trail runners typically require minimal break-in. Factor break-in time into your buying timeline -- do not buy hiking boots immediately before a major trip.
