Movement type is the fundamental identity choice. Quartz movements are battery-powered, accurate to 15 seconds per month, require battery replacement every 1-3 years, and are ideal for tools and everyday wear. Mechanical movements are powered by a mainspring wound by hand or wrist motion, accurate to 10-20 seconds per day, require periodic servicing, and are valued for their craftsmanship. Solar-powered movements eliminate battery replacement while maintaining quartz-level accuracy.

Water resistance ratings are frequently misunderstood. A watch rated 30M water resistance is splash-resistant only -- not suitable for swimming. 100M is the minimum for swimming and recreational water activities. 200M is appropriate for snorkeling and recreational diving. The number refers to static pressure, not depth -- actual safe depth is significantly shallower than the rating implies.
