Stabilization technology separates modern action cameras from older generations more than any other advancement. HyperSmooth and RockSteady produce footage that looks gimbal-stabilized from a body-mounted or helmet-mounted camera. Without electronic stabilization at this quality level, action footage requires external gimbals to avoid nauseating shake. Verify the stabilization generation for any action camera you are considering, as the same model name may span multiple generations with significantly different stabilization quality.

Ecosystem lock-in matters for accessories. GoPro's mount system is the most widely adopted -- aftermarket mounts, cases, and accessories from dozens of manufacturers are available at competitive prices. DJI's mount system is growing. Proprietary mounts from smaller brands limit you to manufacturer accessories at manufacturer pricing. If you anticipate using suction mounts, chest harnesses, or handlebar clamps, ecosystem breadth matters significantly.
