The monitor is the last thing your GPU renders to -- buying a 165Hz monitor and pairing it with a GPU that only pushes 60fps gets you nothing, and buying a 240Hz panel when your system barely sustains 100fps is wasted money. Match the monitor to the GPU, not to your aspirations.

Panel type is the most consequential decision most buyers make by accident. IPS panels offer wide color accuracy and viewing angles. VA panels offer deeper blacks and better contrast but can ghost in fast motion. TN panels are the fastest but have the worst color accuracy and narrow viewing angles. For gaming in 2026, IPS has largely won for most use cases -- the technology gap on contrast has narrowed and most competitive gamers use IPS.

For resolution, 1440p at 165Hz is the sweet spot in 2026: sharper than 1080p, achievable at high frame rates with a mid-range GPU, and not as demanding as 4K. 4K gaming monitors are exceptional for single-player and content consumption but require a top-tier GPU to run at meaningful refresh rates.
