Best Outdoor Bluetooth Speakers

We tested outdoor and portable Bluetooth speakers across maximum volume, bass extension, waterproofing rating, battery life, durability, and wireless range. Outdoor speakers face a different test than indoor speakers -- they must compete with ambient noise, wind, and distance. A speaker that sounds excellent at a desk may disappear at a backyard gathering at 30 feet from the listener.

The IPX rating defines waterproofing capability. IPX7 means the speaker can be submerged to 1 meter for 30 minutes -- sufficient for pool use and beach conditions. IP67 adds dust resistance. These ratings only matter if your use case needs them: a covered patio does not need a premium for submersion-rated waterproofing, but a kayak trip or beach day absolutely does.

Volume and battery runtime trade off against portability. The JBL Charge 5 fits in a bag, runs 20 hours, and sounds remarkably large for its size. The JBL Xtreme 3 is too large for a daypack but fills a backyard gathering. The Bose SoundLink Flex 2 is the quality outlier: exceptional audio engineering in a compact, durable package -- not the loudest on this list, but the best-sounding per cubic inch.
