Best Security Cameras
We reviewed security cameras across video resolution in daylight and at night, motion detection accuracy, false alert rate from cars and animals, local versus cloud storage options, and subscription requirements for full functionality.
Resolution at night is more important than daytime resolution for security purposes. Most incidents that benefit from camera footage occur in low light or darkness. A camera with 4K daytime resolution but poor night vision performs worse than a 1080p camera with Starlight or color night vision technology. Test reviews specifically for night footage clarity at 10-30 feet from the camera.
Local storage versus cloud subscription is the ongoing cost decision that most buyers defer until after purchase. Cameras that only store footage in the cloud require a subscription to access historical video. Local NVR or SD card storage has higher upfront cost but no monthly fees. For multi-camera systems, local storage economics are significantly better. Verify the storage model and subscription requirement before buying.
