Best Blackout Curtains

We reviewed blackout curtains across true light-blocking effectiveness in all conditions, thermal insulation quality, washability and durability through repeated washing, rod compatibility, and whether the lining is visible from outside the home.

The term blackout is not regulated, which means curtains labeled blackout can allow significant light through. True 100% blackout requires a thick or multi-layer construction that physically blocks all light transmission. Room-darkening curtains reduce but do not eliminate light. If your goal is complete darkness for a nursery, shift worker bedroom, or home theater, verify the curtain is rated true 100% blackout and check reviews specifically for light leakage around edges and at the top of the rod.

Hem length and rod pocket size determine how much light enters at the edges. Even a blackout curtain only covers the fabric area -- light enters above the rod, below the hem if it does not reach the floor, and at the sides if panels do not overlap the window frame. Hanging the rod 4-6 inches above the window frame and extending 4-6 inches beyond the window on each side minimizes edge light regardless of the curtain opacity rating.
