The term blackout is not regulated, which means curtains labeled blackout can allow significant light through. True 100% blackout requires a thick or multi-layer construction that physically blocks all light transmission. Room-darkening curtains reduce but do not eliminate light. Hem length and rod pocket size determine how much light enters at the edges. Even a blackout curtain only covers the fabric area -- light enters above the rod, below the hem if it does not reach the floor, and at the sides if panels do not overlap the window frame. Hanging the rod 4-6 inches above the window frame and extending 4-6 inches beyond the window on each side minimizes edge light regardless of the curtain opacity rating.
