Flame realism has improved dramatically in the past decade. Modern electric fireplaces use 3D LED flame effects with depth and multi-color options that pass casual inspection from across the room. The distinction between a realistic flame effect and an obviously fake one is now primarily determined by price tier rather than the fundamental technology. Mid-range and above use multiple LED planes at different depths to create genuine dimensional flame appearance.

Heat output from an electric fireplace is a supplemental heat source, not a primary one. A 1500W electric fireplace produces the same heat as a 1500W space heater -- adequate to supplement a well-insulated room of 400 square feet or less. For buyers expecting to meaningfully heat a room, verify the BTU output and square footage rating against their actual room size.
