We reviewed humidifiers across output in gallons per day at different settings, tank capacity and refill interval, noise at sleeping settings, mineral dust output for ultrasonic models, and ease of cleaning to prevent mold.

Humidifier type determines output quality. Ultrasonic humidifiers use a vibrating membrane that releases fine water droplets -- extremely quiet but can produce white mineral dust from hard water. Evaporative humidifiers use a fan to evaporate water through a wick -- self-regulating and produce no mineral dust, but are louder. Steam humidifiers boil water for the cleanest output but consume more electricity.

Mold risk is the maintenance failure most buyers discover after purchase. A humidifier with a water reservoir that stays wet between uses and is not cleaned weekly can develop mold and broadcast mold spores into the air. Models with antimicrobial tanks, easy disassembly for cleaning, and designs that fully drain between cycles are significantly easier to maintain safely.
