Best USB Hubs

Updated

We reviewed USB hubs across port count, data transfer speed, compatibility with common devices, and build. The right USB hub depends on what you are connecting and how much desk space you want to use.

The most important distinction is between unpowered and powered hubs. An unpowered hub draws power from the host computer through the USB connection, which limits how much current it can deliver to each port. This works well for low-draw devices like mice, keyboards, flash drives, and wireless receivers. Powered hubs include their own AC adapter, which lets them supply full current to every port simultaneously -- essential if you are charging phones, running external hard drives, or connecting six or more devices at once. For a typical desk setup with a mix of input devices and storage, an unpowered hub is usually sufficient.

USB-A versus USB-C input matters more than it used to. Most older laptops and desktop ports are USB-A. Newer laptops, especially thin-and-light models released after 2020, increasingly use USB-C only. If your laptop has only USB-C ports, you need a hub with a USB-C input connector. Hubs with USB-A input are cheaper and work with a wider range of computers, but they cannot connect to USB-C-only machines without an additional adapter.

USB 3.0 speed (5 Gbps) is the right minimum for 2026. USB 2.0 hubs still sell, but at 480 Mbps they create a bottleneck for any external storage device. All five picks here use USB 3.0 for data ports.
