Best Small Breed Dog Food

Updated

We reviewed small breed dry dog foods across protein quality, ingredient sourcing, kibble size, digestibility, and long-term coat and energy outcomes for dogs under 20 pounds. The top brands include options for active adults, sensitive stomachs, grain-sensitive dogs, and budget-conscious owners.

Kibble size is the single most important physical spec in this category. Small breed dogs have smaller mouths and teeth than large breeds. Kibble designed for large dogs forces small dogs to either swallow pieces whole or chew inefficiently, which increases choking risk and reduces digestive efficiency. Genuine small breed formulas reduce kibble diameter so the dog can bite through cleanly. Verify the kibble is labeled small breed, not just marketed that way.

Caloric density matters more for small dogs than most owners realize. Small breeds have faster metabolisms and higher caloric needs per pound of body weight than large breeds. A cup of food contains more calories than a small dog needs in a single serving, so portion control based on weight and life stage is essential. Most of the formulas below include feeding guides by weight -- use them rather than eyeballing.

Royal Canin Size Health Nutrition Small Breed Dog Food Dry

Royal Canin Size Health Nutrition Small Breed is a vet-developed formula with strong buyer feedback and a strong track record for digestive support and healthy weight maintenance. Wellness CORE Small Breed Adult Dry Dog Food, Grain Free Turkey & Chicken

Wellness CORE Small Breed Grain Free Turkey & Chicken is a high-protein, grain-free formula with strong buyer feedback. We skip it because of the FDA's ongoing investigation linking grain-free and legume-heavy diets to dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. Until the research resolves, the risk does not justify choosing grain-free over established grain-inclusive formulas from Purina Pro Plan or Hill's Science Diet.

Skip
