Best Above Ground Pools

Updated

We compared above ground pools across frame type, liner material, setup steps, included filtration, and usable depth. The category spans everything from 10-foot wading pools to 18-foot serious swimming pools, and the price range reflects that -- from affordable entry-level sets to premium pools that approach the cost of a basic in-ground installation.

The spec most buyers ignore is depth. A 30-inch pool sits ankle to knee height on an average adult and is only usable for cooling off or children's splashing. A 42-inch pool is waist-deep for most adults. A 52-inch pool is chest-deep and allows real swimming, floating, and meaningful family use. Always read the depth spec, not just the diameter, before buying.

Filter type is the second major decision. Cartridge filters are standard on smaller pools -- they are easy to use but require frequent cartridge replacement. Sand filter pumps, included with larger Intex sets, run cleaner for longer and cost less to maintain over a season. For any pool over 14 feet in diameter that will be used regularly, a sand filter is worth the higher upfront cost.

Best Starter Pool

Best Starter Pool

Intex 12ft X 30in Prism Frame Pool Set with Filter Pump

The Intex 12ft Prism Frame Pool Set earns strong feedback from verified buyers and is the most accessible entry point into above ground pool ownership. The 30-inch depth is important to understand upfront: at 30 inches, this pool sits knee to waist height on an adult. It is designed for kids to splash in, for adults to cool off in, and for casual wading -- not for swimming. For families with young children or anyone who just wants a seasonal cooling option without the footprint and price of a larger pool, it delivers reliably.

Runner Up

Bestway APX 365 18' x 52" Above Ground Pool Set with Sand Filter Pump

The Bestway APX 365 earns strong feedback from verified buyers and is the strongest alternative to Intex in the large above ground pool market. The 18-foot, 52-inch dimensions match the Intex Ultra XTR, the sand filter pump handles water volume well, and the galvanized steel frame is genuinely rust-resistant. The reason it lands in consider rather than buy: Bestway has a smaller buyer base than Intex in this segment, and long-term durability data from thousands of owners simply does not exist the way it does for established Intex models. Strong pool -- less certainty.

Consider
TL;DR

18ft x 52in -- same real swimming dimensions as the Intex Ultra XTR

Pros

  • Strong feedback from verified buyers
  • 18ft diameter and 52in depth -- real swimming pool dimensions
  • Galvanized steel frame with corrosion resistance
  • Sand filter pump included
  • Competitive alternative to Intex at similar price points

Cons

  • Less established owner base than Intex -- fewer long-term durability data points
  • Smaller replacement parts ecosystem than Intex
  • A solid number of reviews, but significantly fewer than most Intex models in this size range

INTEX 28825EH 16ft X 52in UltraLuxe Premium Above Ground Swimming Pool Set

The Intex UltraLuxe 28825EH is a 16-foot, 52-inch pool with smart Wi-Fi-enabled filtration and water analysis built in -- and weak feedback from a small pool of buyers at a premium price that exceeds the cost of the larger Intex Ultra XTR 18ft. The smart features allow you to monitor your pool's chemistry remotely via app, but they add an app, a Wi-Fi connection, and water sensors to look after, and the premium over the non-smart Ultra XTR buys a smaller pool, not a better one. A pool is a pool -- it does not need Wi-Fi.

TL;DR

Weak buyer feedback -- notably poor for an Intex product

Pros

  • 52-inch depth is genuine swimming pool depth
  • Dual sand filter pump is a real filtration advantage
  • Retractable ladder is a convenience upgrade over standard ladders

Cons

  • Weak buyer feedback -- notably poor for an Intex product
  • Premium price tag for a pool that is smaller than the cheaper Intex Ultra XTR 18ft
  • 16ft diameter is smaller than the 18ft Ultra XTR but costs significantly more
  • A small buyer base for a premium-priced pool
