Competitive players who rely on consistent placement tend toward thicker cores.

The USAPA approval requirement only matters for sanctioned tournament play. Recreational players can use any paddle without restriction. If you play exclusively at rec centers, community courts, and casual games, USAPA approval is irrelevant to your purchase.
