Voltage is marketing shorthand for torque capacity -- but it is not the complete picture. An 18V brushless drill from a quality manufacturer outperforms a 20V brushed drill from a budget brand. What determines actual torque is the motor design, the electronic torque management, and the clutch system. Look for the listed in-lb of torque rather than just the voltage rating.

Battery platform is the most important long-term decision. If you own a DeWalt 20V MAX drill, adding a DeWalt impact driver, circular saw, and jigsaw means sharing the same battery platform. Batteries are the most expensive single component in a cordless tool setup -- a platform with multiple batteries becomes significantly more economical than mixing brands. Buy into a platform, not just a drill.
