Best LED Shop Lights

Updated

We compared five 4-foot shop lights on the specs that decide how a garage or workshop actually looks once they are up: lumens per fixture, efficiency in lumens per watt, color temperature, color accuracy (CRI), how many fixtures link from one outlet, and whether the fixture plugs in or has to be wired. Every number on these pages comes from the maker's own spec sheet or product page, not from buyer reviews, and we say whose number it is.

Start with how many fixtures you need. Hykolity's own rule of thumb is that one 4,400-lumen light hung 8 to 10 feet up covers about a 7 by 7 foot area, which works out to roughly six fixtures for a 20 by 15 foot two-car garage. Higher-output fixtures cover more ground per unit: the Commercial Electric 4-light puts out 7,000 lumens, while a single Barrina T5 tube is 2,200 lumens and is meant to be linked in runs. Linking limits matter for layout: Barrina links up to 8, Hykolity up to 6, Sunco up to 4.

Then pick the light itself. 4000K reads as neutral white and 5000K as daylight; both work for workshops, and most of these lights come in more than one. CRI above 80 is the baseline for telling colors apart on paint, wood and wiring; Barrina lists 85 and the Commercial Electric fixture 83. For a garage, check that the fixture is damp rated (Sunco and the Commercial Electric fixture say so). Skip fluorescent fixtures for a new install: under California's AB 2208, new linear fluorescent tubes have not been allowed for sale there since January 2025, and an LED fixture has no tubes to replace.

Lithonia Lighting Two-Light T8 Fluorescent Strip Light, 4 ft, 120V (C 2 32 120 GESB)

This is Lithonia's C 2 32 120 GESB, a 4-foot strip fixture for two 32-watt T8 fluorescent tubes on a 120V instant-start electronic ballast. Retailer listings say the tubes are not included. It is a sound commercial fixture, but fluorescent is the wrong technology for a new install: under California's AB 2208, new linear fluorescent tubes have not been allowed for sale there since January 2025, and the LED fixtures here have no tubes to buy or replace.

TL;DR

Two 32W T8 fluorescent tubes, not included

Pros

  • Lithonia is an established commercial lighting brand
  • Electronic ballast rated to start down to 0 F (retailer listing)
  • Steel housing can be mounted singly or in a continuous row

Cons

  • Fluorescent: tubes are sold separately and are being phased out
  • Two 32W tubes for 64W total, more power than every LED fixture here except the 80W Commercial Electric
  • No plug-in cord listed, so plan on wiring it in
  • Sold on Amazon through a third-party seller
