Motor power determines whether the blender handles frozen ingredients without stalling. A 500W blender handles soft fruits and liquids easily but bogs down on frozen fruit and ice. 1000-1200W is the threshold for reliable ice crushing and smoothies with frozen ingredients. Blenders claiming 1500W or higher peak power are often referring to peak motor output, not sustained output -- sustained wattage is what matters for thick blending.
Container design affects every use. A narrow container creates a vortex that pulls ingredients toward the blade efficiently -- better for smaller batches and nut butters. A wide container allows larger batches but can trap ingredients at the edges away from the blade, requiring scraping. Tamper compatibility -- whether the blender allows using a tamper to push ingredients down while running -- matters for thick blends.
