Best Espresso Machines

Updated

We evaluated espresso machines across extraction pressure, boiler type, grinder integration, steam wand performance, ease of dialing in a shot, warm-up time, and total cost of ownership including consumables. The gap between a pod machine and a manual machine is not just about price -- it is about what you are actually making. A Nespresso extracts a consistent shot from a sealed pod with no variables. A manual machine extracts from freshly ground beans with every variable you can adjust.

The most overlooked factor when buying an espresso machine is grinder pairing. A midrange machine with a cheap blade grinder will make worse espresso than an entry machine with a real burr grinder. If you are not budgeting for a grinder alongside the machine, the all-in-one Breville Barista Express is the answer -- it solves this by putting a grinder inside the machine.

For beginners who want good espresso without the learning curve, the Breville Bambino Plus auto-steams milk and auto-purges the steam wand. For pod-only simplicity with no grinding or tamping, Nespresso Vertuo is a different product category entirely -- easier and more consistent, but with no ability to use fresh beans.
