We reviewed toaster ovens across internal temperature accuracy versus set temperature, heating evenness across the cooking surface, convection performance for roasting and baking, preheat time, interior capacity, and cleaning ease.

Convection is the upgrade that changes what a toaster oven can realistically do. Standard toaster ovens heat from top and bottom elements only -- convection adds a fan that circulates air for faster, more even cooking. For roasting vegetables, baking cookies, and achieving crispy results, convection performs measurably better. The price premium for convection is modest at the same size tier.

Interior capacity is frequently overstated. A toaster oven claiming a 12-slice toast capacity may physically fit 12 slices but only heat the center 8 evenly -- outer slices receive less direct element exposure. The practical capacity for even cooking is typically 70-80% of the marketed capacity. Reviews that show actual baking sheet fits and food placement are more useful than manufacturer capacity claims.
