Battery life and backup entry method are the practical safety features most buyers do not prioritize until they are locked out. Most smart locks run on 4 AA batteries providing 6-12 months of operation. When batteries die, you lose keypad access. Quality smart locks include physical key backup cylinders for mechanical entry when batteries fail. Verify that a physical key override exists before buying.

Security grade certification from BHMA or ANSI indicates tested pick resistance, bump resistance, and forced entry resistance. Grade 1 is the highest residential security standard. Most smart locks are Grade 3 or unrated -- which means the deadbolt may be smart but not particularly secure physically. For a primary front door lock, Grade 1 or Grade 2 certification is worth prioritizing.
