Joule ratings are cumulative, not renewable. A surge protector rated at 2000 joules absorbs up to 2000 joules of surge energy over its lifetime. After a major surge event that consumes most of this capacity, the protector may continue to pass power but with significantly reduced surge protection. High joule ratings provide more margin before this depletion point is reached.

Clamping voltage is the threshold at which the surge protector begins suppressing the surge. A lower clamping voltage means the surge protector starts protecting earlier and limits the voltage spike that reaches connected equipment. 330V clamping is good, 400V is acceptable, anything above 500V provides minimal meaningful protection for sensitive electronics. This specification appears on quality product listings but is absent from most budget surge protectors.
