What You Get Free
Every doorbell here needs a paid plan to keep video, but the Nest is the only one that saves something without one: up to 6 hours of event previews with clips up to 10 seconds. That is enough to see who came by while you missed an alert. For 30 or 60 days of history, continuous recording or Gemini features, Google sells Google Home Premium plans.
The Wiring Requirement
This model must be connected to a 16 to 24 volt AC, 10 to 40 VA doorbell transformer, or to Google's indoor power adapter, in which case your wired chime will not ring. In return it never needs charging and supports 24/7 live view. If you have no doorbell wires, Google's battery Nest Doorbell or the Ring Battery Doorbell 2K is the better fit.
It works with the Google Home app, Gemini for Home and Alexa devices, so it is not limited to Google speakers.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Only doorbell here with free event history (up to 6 hours of previews)
- IP65 water and dust rating, the strongest published here
- 24/7 live view on constant power
- Dual-band Wi-Fi, 2048 x 2048 HDR video
- Works with Google Home and Alexa
Cons
- Needs a 16-24VAC, 10-40VA doorbell transformer, or the indoor power adapter
- Infrared night vision only, rated to 10 feet
- Event history beyond 6 hours and Gemini features need Google Home Premium
- Rated only to 104 F, lower than the Ring and Arlo models
- One-year limited warranty (three years when installed by a Nest Pro)
Bottom Line
Consider the Google Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) if you have working doorbell wiring: it has the strongest weather rating here and the only free event history. Without wiring, choose a battery doorbell instead.
