We compared five video doorbells from Ring, Arlo and Google on the specs that decide whether one works at your door: how it is powered, what wiring it needs, the camera's resolution and field of view, night vision, Wi-Fi, weather rating, and which features need a paid plan. Every number comes from the maker's own spec page or data sheet, and we say which maker said it. We did not run our own tests.

Start with power. Battery doorbells (Ring Battery Doorbell 2K and 2K Plus, Arlo 2K) install anywhere and can also connect to existing doorbell wires to trickle-charge. Wired-only doorbells (Ring Wired Doorbell 2K Plus, Nest Doorbell wired) need a working doorbell transformer, 16 to 24 volts AC, and in return they never need charging and can stream live view around the clock. If you have no doorbell wires, pick a battery model.

Then check what is free. On all three brands, saving and replaying video needs a paid plan: Ring Protect, Arlo Secure or Google Home Premium. Without one, Ring and Arlo give live view and motion alerts, while the Nest keeps up to 6 hours of short event previews for free. Ring and Arlo include a free trial of their plans. Last, check your Wi-Fi: the Ring Battery Doorbell 2K and the Arlo connect on 2.4 GHz only, while the Ring Plus models and the Nest also use 5 GHz.
